When it comes to blocked or damaged pipes, not every situation can be managed using standard methods such as water jetting or drain clearing tools such as eels, snakes and augers. While these solutions work well for blockages such as paper/wipes, root balls, grease, sludge or loose debris, more complex blockages may require a more advanced, powerful, and precise approach.
Robotic cutting is one of the most effective tools used in modern pipe rehabilitation. It allows plumbers to see and remove solid obstructions in real time, restore pipe functionality, prepare pipelines for relining, all without excavation.
Here are four common pipe problems that robotic cutting can solve, where other methods fall short.
1. Extra Solid Obstructions
It might sound bizarre, but materials such as concrete do end up in pipes during & after construction! This happens where concrete or mortar is accidentally (or in some cases on purpose) swept, washed or blown into drainage. This can completely block a pipe and is often impossible to remove using traditional clearing methods.
Robotic cutting uses specialised tool arms with diamond cutting heads to grind and break down hardened obstructions, restoring the internal diameter of the pipe. This makes it the go-to solution when:
- Concrete slurry has entered the drainage system
- Construction dust and debris has joined with water and hardened inside the pipe
- Construction debris has ended up in drainage causing hard obstacles.
Without robotic cutting, these situations will lead to costly excavation (if at all possible) and pipe replacement.
2. Mature Tree Roots
Tree roots are a leading cause of recurring drain blockages. While jetting can temporarily clear roots for smaller trees, it typically doesn’t remove them completely and regrowth is common.
But when you’ve got larger trees that have been growing inside a property’s plumbing sometimes for years, those roots can’t be flushed out with water jetting alone.

These problems cannot be resolved with jetting or basic clearing methods because the epoxy resin of the relining process is incredibly strong and designed to last up to 50 years!
Robotic cutting allows us to carefully remove or correct defective sections of liner, restoring the pipe’s internal shape. Once the issue is addressed, the pipe can then be properly relined again if needed.

4. Foreign Objects and Intrusions
Pipes can become misaligned, lipped, holey & blocked by many things! In a lot of cases, foreign objects and structural intrusions that break the drain are the cause of persistent issues. You wouldn’t believe what we’ve seen in our 10+ years of pipe relining! Concrete, star pickets, concrete piers, and drill bits going straight through pipes have caused some massive issues!
Robotic cutting tools are equipped to handle a wide range of materials, including metal, roots, and extremely hardened debris. With the help of inbuilt CCTV cameras, our plumbers can precisely target and remove these obstructions with the robots, all without damaging the pipe (in most cases- where the pipe or drain is damaged we can reline it to repair like new).
